DSC_0014Music & Performing Arts at Tiverton

Music and the Performing Arts play an important role at Tiverton.

Children attend weekly music lessons and singing assemblies, and in year 4 all children learn either cello, violin or trumpet through Haringey music service.

Children have many opportunities to perform throughout the year in choir concerts, music assemblies and musical theatre productions. They also have opportunities to be involved in making and performing original work through creative performance

projects.

Extra-curricular music and performing arts activities include choirs, instrumental clubs, dance club and musical theatre club.

Creative Performance Projects

The starting point for a creative performance project is usually a text or a topic being studied in class. Through music, drama and movement activities, children are encouraged to explore and immerse themselves in a story, connecting with the characters and relationships that exist within it.

Each project has elements of material written by Kate Stilitz, the music and Drama teacher, that act as a springboard for creative exploration. This material may be a song, a section of improvised instrumental music, the opening of a monologue or a movement motif. Within this structure, children improvise individually and in groups to develop characters and scenes, compose music and choreograph movement. The interdisciplinary aspect of the work and the fluid transition between the disciplines creates a dynamic and exciting context within which ideas can be explored and new work created.

Our creative performance projects lend themselves to many cross-curricular subjects such as English, Speaking and Listening, PSHE, Science and History.
